Kelimutu Lake - Indonesia

Kelimutu is a volcano located on the island of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Exact location of this mountain in the village of strikes, District Kelimutu, Ende. This mountain has three crater lakes on top. This lake is known as the Three Colors Lake because it has three different colors, namely red, blue and white. Even so, the colors are always changing with the passage of time.

Kelimutu is a combination word of "keli" meaning mountain and the word "quality" which means to boil. According to local belief, the colors on the lake Kelimutu has the meaning of each and have a very powerful force of nature.


Tiwu Kelimutu lake or in the top three sections corresponding with the colors - colors that are in the lake. Blue lake or "Nuwa Tiwu Muri Koo Fai" is a gathering place of the souls of young people who have died. The lake is colored red or "Tiwu Ata Polo" is a gathering place the souls of people who have died and during her life is always a crime / magick. While the lake is white or "Ata Tiwu tourists" is a gathering place the souls of parents who have died.

The third area of the lake was approximately 1.051 million square meters with a volume of 1292 million cubic meters of water. Boundary between narrow rock walls of the lake is an easy landslide. This wall is very steep with a slope of 70 degrees. Height of the walls of the lake ranges from 50 to 150 meters.
